Slot Machine Lingo

Hit Frequency - The frequency of getting a winning spin. A higher hit frequency is obviously better than a low one the machine's pay cycle also has an effect on the likliehood of a win.

Max Bet - This is the maximum amount of money you can wager per spin. Note that on many progressive jackpot machines, you must place the max bet in order to be eligible for the jackpot.

Multi-line - A slot machine with more than one pay line. Slot machines can have up to 20 different pay lines so you should read all about the machine before you play.

Progressive Jackpot - A pot of money which grows as people play. These slots are normally linked up at several casinos so the jackpots can grow very large. You can still win regular payouts on these machines but if you hit the jackpot you are rich!

Pay line - A line on the machine where you must line up the symbols to win. Slots can have from 1 to 20 pay lines.

Pay Table - The part of the slot machine that describes how much you will win for each type of combination. The pay table will also tell you if there are bonus features and if max bet can reward you with a bonus top prize.

Reels - The part of the slot machine that spins when you pull the handle or press the button, the symbols are on the reels. You can have from 3 to 5 reels.

Symbols - The fancy pictures which you must line up to score a win. Common examples are "BAR" symbols and "7" symbols.

Wild Symbol - This acts like a joker and will count for any other symbol, often making up that crucial third symbol in a winning combination. Some slots have wild symbols which also multiply the win for each wild that is present in a combo.
